FAQ
FAQ
Setup, widget, checkout, plans, and uninstall — short and sorted.
Getting started
How do I create my first volume discount?
Open Volume discounts in the left app menu. Click Create rule.
Give the rule a title (Shopify discount list only — shoppers do not see it). Choose Specific products or Collections, then Select products / Select collections.
Add quantity tiers (for example 2 = 10%, 5 = 15%). Save as draft to keep working, or Save and activate to push the discount to checkout.
Activation writes a Shopify automatic app discount and product metafields. Without activation, the storefront widget stays empty even if you saved a draft.
Why is there no BulkMax box on the Shopify product admin page?
BulkMax does not add a section inside Products → a product. That is normal.
All settings live in this app: Volume discounts → Edit rule. Pick the product there. Shoppers see tiers only after you add the theme app block (see Product-page widget).
I changed a rule and left the page. Where did my edits go?
Unsaved edits are discarded. The editor shows Unsaved changes, Shopify’s Save bar (Save / Discard), and a leave prompt when you navigate away.
Click Save (or Save and activate) before Volume discounts, Home, or the browser back button. Discard restores the last saved version.
Rules and the editor
Edit rule stays white or jumps back to the list.
Use Chrome (Incognito is fine). Do not use Arc or the Cursor/Electron browser — those often show a blank iframe.
Keep one `shopify app dev` / one app tab. Open the app from the current Preview URL, then Volume discounts → Edit rule.
If it is still blank: hard-reload (Ctrl+Shift+R). The editor should show title, products, tiers, and design preview.
What do Save, Save as draft, Pause, and Discard do?
Save writes the current form to BulkMax. On an active rule it also updates the Shopify discount and metafields.
Save and activate turns a draft into a live checkout discount. Save as draft stores the rule without applying a discount.
Pause deactivates the Shopify discount. Tiers disappear from checkout until you Save and activate again. The rule stays in the list as inactive.
Discard on the Save bar throws away unsaved form edits only. It does not delete the rule.
I cannot activate a second rule.
The Free plan allows one active rule. Pause or delete the first rule, or upgrade to Starter / Pro from the editor Upgrade plan button (Shopify’s pricing page).
Shopify also shares a hard cap of 25 active automatic app discounts across every app. If that banner appears, pause another automatic app discount in Shopify Admin → Discounts first.
Two rules mention the same product. Which one wins?
The editor warns when another active rule already targets the same products or collections. Fix the targets so they do not overlap, or pause one rule.
Checkout uses the Shopify discount function for the active BulkMax rule that matches the line. Overlap is a setup error, not a stacking feature.
The discount should only apply to tagged customers.
Customer-tag targeting is a Pro feature. On Free or Starter the field is disabled; a rule that still has tags after a downgrade will not activate until you clear the tags or upgrade.
The shopper must be logged in with that tag on the customer. Guest checkout never matches a tag rule.
How do start and end dates work?
Set them under Schedule in the editor, then Save / Save and activate. Shopify turns the automatic discount on and off at those times.
An end date in the past leaves the rule inactive. Clear both dates for an always-on rule.
Checkout discount does not apply
Tiers show on the product page, but checkout is still full price.
The rule status must be Active (not Draft / paused). Use Save and activate, then wait a few seconds and refresh checkout.
The cart line quantity must reach the first tier (for example quantity 2 for a 2+ tier). Quantity 1 never discounts.
The product in the cart must be one you selected, or sit in a selected collection. A different variant of an unlisted product will not match.
Shopify may already apply another automatic discount. BulkMax does not replace every native discount. Test with an empty cart and only this product.
It works on one product and not on another.
Open the rule → Select products and confirm the missing product is in the list. Collection rules only cover products that are still in that collection.
After you add a product, Save and activate again so metafields rewrite. A draft save does not publish checkout prices.
How do I test a purchase without going live to customers?
Use a development store or a password-protected storefront. Activate the rule, add the product at tier quantity, open the cart, then checkout.
You should see a discount line on the cart/checkout summary. If the widget moved quantity but checkout did not discount, the rule is not Active or the product is not a target.
Product-page widget
How do I put the tier widget on the product page?
Online Store → Themes → Customize. Open the product template (not the home page).
Add block → Apps → Volume tiers. Place it near the quantity picker or buy button. Save the theme.
Open a product that belongs to an Active rule. You should see the pills/cards and a quantity change when you click a tier.
I added the app block but the product page shows nothing.
Check all four: (1) theme saved, (2) you edited the product template that this product uses, (3) the rule is Active, (4) this product is a target of that rule.
Vintage / Online Store 1.0 themes cannot add app blocks. Switch to an OS 2.0 theme or duplicate Dawn, add the block there, then publish.
If you only previewed a different theme in the editor, the live shop still uses the published theme — add the block on the published one too.
Cards, list, or custom CSS look fine in the editor but the shop stays on pills.
Free is limited to the pills layout on the storefront. The editor preview follows the dropdown so you can design ahead; live Cards / List / custom CSS need Starter or Pro.
Upgrade from the editor, then Save and activate so storefront settings refresh.
The cart progress bar does not show.
Cart progress is Starter / Pro. Use the coral button “turn on the cart-bar embed” (Support, FAQ, Cart bar page), or Theme editor → App embeds → BulkMax cart progress, then save.
Choose drawer or page placement in the embed settings. Open the cart with a product from an Active rule that still has a higher tier.
Clicking a tier sets quantity, then it jumps back to 1.
Some Dawn-family themes reset the quantity input. Use the current BulkMax widget (theme app extension from the latest app deploy).
If you still see it after a theme refresh: click the tier, then Add to cart immediately, or type the quantity by hand. Report the theme name under Support if it persists on a current Dawn version.
Plans and upgrades
How do I upgrade from Free?
Use Upgrade plan (top-right on every BulkMax page, and in the rule editor). Shopify opens the app pricing page for this shop. Pick Starter or Pro and confirm in Shopify Admin — BulkMax does not take a card number inside the app.
After Shopify confirms the subscription, reload the app. Cards/list, cart progress, extra active rules, and Pro tags unlock from the new plan.
What does each plan include?
Free: 1 active rule, pills layout, house AI credits, BYOK after credits run out.
Starter: up to Shopify’s 25 automatic-app-discount slots, Cards/List/custom CSS, cart progress bar.
Pro: everything in Starter plus customer-tag targeting and unlimited house AI (no credit meter for text tools).
AI, credits, and BYOK
AI buttons fail or say I am out of credits.
Home and AI & BYOK show the credit meter. Text tools (roast, badge copy) spend house credits on Free/Starter until you add your own key.
Open AI & BYOK. Paste an OpenAI, Gemini, or Anthropic key and save. After a valid key, those text tools use your key and stop spending house credits.
Pro does not spend house credits on text tools. Badge images always use BulkMax’s image service (10 credits each) and never your text key.
Badge graphic generation failed or ate credits.
Each generate costs 10 credits. A failed generate should refund. If the meter did not bounce back, reload AI & BYOK and try once more — do not spam generate.
Under AI & BYOK you can delete generated graphics from Shopify Files so unused PNGs do not stay in the shop.
Uninstall and data
What happens if I uninstall BulkMax?
Open AI & BYOK before you remove the app. The checkbox “Keep settings and rules for a later reinstall” is on by default.
Checked: Shopify sessions are deleted, discounts are detached (rules become drafts). Your rules and BYOK settings stay in BulkMax for a later install.
Unchecked: BulkMax deletes the shop’s rules and settings. Shopify also removes app metafields and theme app blocks/embeds. GDPR shop/redact always deletes everything.
I reinstalled and my rules are missing or still there.
If you kept data, open Volume discounts — drafts should still be listed. Activate the ones you need (Save and activate) so checkout metafields rewrite.
If you turned the checkbox off, those rules are gone. Create them again. Theme blocks must be added once more after any uninstall.
Analytics
Redemptions stay at 0 after test orders.
Shopify’s usage count can lag. Place an order with an Active rule at tier quantity, then wait and reload Home / Volume discounts.
Draft rules and paused rules do not increment. Orders without the BulkMax automatic discount (wrong product or qty 1) do not count.
The AOV uplift number looks invented.
It is a simulation from your first quantity tier and the preview reference price — not attributed Shopify revenue. Use it to compare tier shapes, not for accounting.
